How Excess Heat Affects Your Property

What Excess Attic Heat Causes

Excess attic heat doesn’t stay in the attic—it spreads into your living spaces, forcing your HVAC system to work harder. This leads to higher energy bills, reduced comfort, and long-term strain on your entire cooling system.

01

Hot Attic Temperatures

Excess attic heat builds up quickly and traps heat, affecting overall comfort.

02

Heat Entering Spaces

Weak insulation allows heat to transfer into living areas, causing discomfort.

03

Higher Cooling Demand

Your HVAC system works harder, increasing strain and reducing efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking. Don't see your question? We're one phone call away.

01 How do solar attic fans work?

Solar attic fans use sunlight to power a small motor that pulls hot air out of your attic, improving ventilation without using electricity.

02 Do solar attic fans work on cloudy days?

Yes, they still operate on cloudy days, but performance may be slightly reduced since they rely on available sunlight.

03 Will a solar attic fan lower my energy bills?

Yes, by reducing attic heat, your HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard, which can lower overall cooling costs.

04 Where can solar attic fans be installed?

They are typically installed on the roof or attic vents and can be used in both residential and light commercial properties.

05 Do solar attic fans require maintenance?

They require very little maintenance since they have no complex wiring or high-power mechanical parts. Occasional cleaning is usually enough.

What a solar attic fan does, and what it does not

A solar attic fan is a photovoltaic-powered exhaust fan that pulls superheated air out of the attic and draws cooler outside air in through the soffit vents. It runs hardest exactly when you need it most, because the sun that is heating the roof is also driving the fan. There is no wiring and no operating cost.

It is worth being direct about the limits. An attic fan reduces attic temperature; it does not replace insulation or air sealing, and in a house with a leaky ceiling plane a powered fan can pull conditioned air up out of the living space. Sealing first, then ventilating, is the correct order and it is the order we work in.

Where it makes the biggest difference

Sizing and placement

Sizing is a function of attic volume and existing net free ventilation area. Under-ventilating achieves nothing; over-ventilating without matching intake causes the problem described above. Placement is normally high on the rear or side slope, away from the ridge on ridge-vented roofs so the two systems do not short-circuit each other. On tile roofs we use tile-specific flashings so the covering stays watertight and within its product approval.

Installation and code

Solar attic fans are a permitted roof penetration in most Florida jurisdictions, and in High-Velocity Hurricane Zone counties the unit and its flashing need current product approval. Units are installed with the same flashing discipline as any other roof penetration, because a ventilation improvement that leaks is a net loss.

Short answer: Solar attic fans remove trapped heat automatically, using power from the sun rather than your electric bill, reducing strain on your HVAC system during Florida's hottest months.
