How Many Solar Panels Do I Need?

Short answer: most Florida homes need somewhere between 20 and 35 panels, but the real number comes from your actual electricity usage, not your square footage.

Quick answer: Take your annual kWh usage from your utility bills, divide by roughly 1,600 kWh per kW per year (a typical Florida production estimate), and that gives you the system size in kW. A 12,000 kWh/year home needs roughly a 7.5 kW system, or about 17 panels at 440W each.

Panel count is a downstream number, not a starting point. The starting point is your household’s actual electricity usage, which we pull directly from twelve months of utility bills rather than guessing from square footage or bedroom count.

The sizing formula

What changes the number

  • Roof orientation and shading. A south-facing, unshaded roof produces more per panel than a shaded or east/west-facing one, which can shift panel count up or down.
  • Whether you’re adding loads. Planning an EV charger, a pool heater, or a heat-pump water heater changes your future usage, so we factor planned additions into sizing, not just historical bills.
  • Net metering strategy. Since Florida utilities generally credit surplus production at retail rate through the year, sizing close to 100% of usage is usually more efficient than deliberately oversizing.
  • Battery goals. If backup power during outages is a priority, that can change the system design independently of the panel count needed to offset your bill.
